Introduction to slots returns

Payback, return to player, returns, yield, RTP ('Return to Player') rate are all different terms referring to the same thing...how much of the cash that you plug into the slot machine does it pay back to you.

Slots are a game of pure chance with no real skill or game altering decision making required.  The amount that a machine will return is programmed to a predetermined rate, that is usually expressed as a percentage.  An RTP rate of 90% means that over time, for every $100 put into the machine, $90 is payed back in winnings.  Some players will win, some will lose, but overall the house takes its 10%.

So, the big question is, how do returns at traditional/terrestrial slots and online slots compare?

Summary findings

Slots type RTP Range  RTP Average
Traditional - US 90.12% - 96.05% 93.12%
Traditional - Australia 85.47% - 90.66% 89.62%
Online 93.71% - 97.57% 95.71%

Online slot games were found to return significantly higher amounts than traditional slot machines in the US and Australia.  Online slots returned on average, over 2.5% more than traditional US slot machines, and over 6% more than traditional Australian slot machines.

This result is not surprising considering the considerable overheads and taxes applying to traditional land based operators, which do not apply to online operators.

The stats...traditional slot returns

Set out below is a selection of reported slots RTP rates across a number of well known gambling jurisdictions around the world.  The list does not include every jurisdiction where slots are played as this would be practically impossible (for most jurisdictions accurate data is not publicly available - eg slots on international water cruises where there is no governing authority) but is representative.

A number of jurisdictions are required to make publicly available their actual historical slots payback rates.  These are set out below:

Where actual rates are not reported:

Regulations governing gaming in certain jurisdictions set RTP limits that must be adhered to but, do not required that actual rates be made publicly available by operators.  We will only look at actual historical rates so cannot include these jurisdictions in the analysis, but as a matter of interest, regulatory minimum RTP rates are set out below.  Operators are free to set their slots returns anywhere above the minimum.
